Naval Science Uniform (NSU)

Males:

J-Bar: The bottom of the JROTC bar insignia is 1 ⅞ inch from the left collar point.

Rank: The center of each insignia is 1 ⅞ inch from the right collar point.

Name Tag: ¼ inch above and centered on the right breast pocket.

Ribbons: ¼ inch above and centered on the left breast pocket.

Medals: ¼ inch below the top of the pocket, similarly centered.

Service Star(s): ¼ inch above ribbons and centered on the left side.

Females:

J-Bar: The bottom of the JROTC bar insignia is 1 ⅞ inch from the left collar point.

Rank: The center of each insignia is 1 ⅞ inch from the right collar point.

Name Tag: 6 ¼ inch down the right shoulder seam centered to the bottom of the name tag.

Ribbons: 6 ¼ inch down the left shoulder seam centered to the bottom of the ribbon bar.

Medals: ¼ inch below bottom rack of ribbons, similarly centered.

Service Star(s): ¼ inch above ribbons and centered on the left side.

Honor Roll Stars: ¼ inch centered above JBAR on the left collar

Service Dress Blue (SDB)

Males:

J-Bar and Rank: Positioned on opposite sides, 1/2 inch above the lapel notch and parallel to the deck. The JROTC bar is on the left, and the rank insignia is on the right. Both are centered between the collar's outer edges.

Name Tag: Worn on the wearer’s right side, 1/4 inch above and centered on the coat pocket, parallel to the deck.

Ribbons: Similar to the name tag, ribbons are worn on the left side, 1/4 inch above and centered on the coat pocket, parallel to the deck.

Medals: Worn 1/4 inch below the top of the pocket and centered.

Service Stars: Placed 1/4 inch above the top row of ribbons. One star is centered; multiple unjoined stars are spaced 1/4 inch apart and centered. Stars joined as a single device are centered on the ribbons.

Females:

J-Bar: Positioned on the rounded end of the collar, 1 inch from the bottom edge. The vertical axis of the insignia is centered between the collar’s rounded edges. The JROTC bar is worn on the left side.

Rank: Worn on the right side, parallel to the J-Bar.

Name Tag: Positioned 1/4 inch above and centered on the coat pocket, parallel to the top of the pocket.

Ribbons: Positioned similarly to the name tag, 1/4 inch above and centered on the coat pocket, parallel to the top of the pocket.

Service Stars: Worn 1/4 inch above the top row of ribbons. Single stars are centered, and unjoined multiple stars are spaced 1/4 inch apart. Stars joined as a single device are centered on the ribbons.

Male

Hair: Natural color with a maximum of 2 inches bulk on top, 3/4 inch taper upward, and cannot touch the ears. Sideburns shall not pass the middle of the ear. No beards or mustaches.

Sideburns: Neatly trimmed and tailored as described here. Shall not extend below a point level with the middle of the ear, as indicated by line A and shall be of even width (not tapered or flared). Shall end with a clean-shaven horizontal line.

Mustaches: Neat and closely trimmed. No portion shall extend below the upper lip line as indicated by line D. Shall not be below the horizontal line extending across the corners of the mouth as indicated by line B. Shall not be more than 1/4 inch beyond a vertical line drawn upward from the corners of the mouth as indicated by line C. No other facial hair is permitted.

Fingernails: Will not extend past the fingertips.

Earrings/Studs: Not authorized in the ear, nose, eyebrows, tongue, lips, or other areas of the face or body visible to the naval science instructor.

Necklaces: Authorized, but shall not be visible.

Rings: One per hand is authorized.

Wristwatch/Bracelet: One of each is authorized but no ankle bracelets.

Sunglasses: A conservative pair is permitted when authorized by the naval science instructor. Sunglasses are never authorized in military formations. Retainer straps are not authorized.

Hair/ Appearance

Female

Hair: Natural color with a maximum of 2 inches bulk on top, above the bottom collar, and hair ties must match hair color. Braids and ponytails include; single braid, french braid, or a single ponytail is authorized in Service, Working, and PT uniforms. The initial accessory for the ponytail will not be visible when facing forward. Authorized accessory devices must be consistent with the color of the hair. The end of the braid or ponytail may extend up to three inches below the lower edge of the collar of the shirt, jacket or coat. 2. Hair Buns will not exceed three inches from the scalp or extend beyond the width of the back of the head.

Hair Ornaments: Must be consistent with the hair color. A maximum of two small barrettes, similar to hair color, may be used to secure the hair to the head. Bun accessories (used to form the bun), are authorized if completely concealed. Headbands, “scrunchies,” combs, claws, and butterfly clips are examples of accessories that are not authorized. Conspicuous rubber bands, combs, and pins are not authorized.

Cosmetics: Applied in good taste and colors that blend with natural skin tone. Exaggerated or faddish cosmetics are inappropriate. Lipstick should be conservative.

Fingernails: Fingernails shall not exceed 1/4 inch measured from the fingertip. They shall be kept clean. Nail polish may be worn, but colors shall be conservative and complement the skin tone.

Earrings/Studs: One per ear, centered on the earlobe. Must be a small gold or silver ball (post or screw on). Studs are not authorized in the nose, eyebrows, tongue, lips, or other areas of the face or body visible to the naval science instructor.

Necklaces: Authorized, but shall not be visible.

Rings: One per hand is authorized, plus the engagement ring or the wedding ring.

Wristwatch/Bracelet: One of each is authorized but no ankle bracelets.
